*Brazilian folk tale: How night came.*

*Very long time ago when in the earth, there was no night. Therefore, there were no sunrise or sunset, starlight or moonbeams, no night animals and night flowers, no lengthening shadows, nor soft night air, heavy with perfume. The daughter of the great Sea Serpent married to the son of the great earth race known as MAN. Different from the place she had been used to live where was among the shades of the deep seas, the earth was now her home where there was no night which made her get older and unhappier. Her husband loved her so much, couldn’t bear to see her like that. He ordered his three men to travel to her father’s place for some of the darkness of night. Her father put the nights in a bag and gave to them. He told them to open it in the presence of his daughter. On the way back to their owner, they usually heard terrible sounds from the bag. One day, they couldn’t stand any more and opened the bag to see things inside. Since that the Earth had nights. The daughter of the great Sea Serpent was very happy. But the three servants became monkeys was caused by their owner due to not obeying the order of his father in law which was not to open the bag without the presence of his daughter.*
